OUR STORY

Sugarneck is rumored to have gotten its name by the bootleggers traveling along the Cape Fear River as a code word for the place where they would pick up their moonshine. Sugarneck reaches back long before smartphones and social media, back to a time when the only way to send a message was by writing a letter and sending it in the mail.

One of the earliest U.S. Post Offices in North Carolina still stands strong today. It was a community where people gathered, shared news and good times.

Built in 1874, the renovated original Cabin structure serves as a unique visual reminder of those simpler times. The Cabin and the Post Office are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The vast scenic views of the North Carolina countryside along with the grandness of our 150 year old Oak trees do not go unnoticed, and at night, the stars light up the sky. Today, there is an unexpected immersive experience that brings history, nature and modern elegance together in total privacy.

Dear Guests,

We hope this letter finds you well.  As we write this, we are surrounded by the beauty of nature, with no distractions or interruptions from the modern world.  It is peaceful and quiet.

Sugarneck’s history is rich and a combination of Life, Love Laughter & Legacy.  Although we do not live here…it is our homeplace.  We have been entrusted to carry on the legacy and vision of what we have always known it to be.

Cyrus Womack, who was raised across the road and was a Timberman, acquired the first piece of property in 1957. This was his place to relax and gather with friends and family to share good times….no gathering was too big!

This love for sharing Sugarneck lives on today and we strive to provide an exceptional place for others to create new memories!

So, don’t be afraid to slow down.  Embrace the simpler things in life, connect with those who matter most, and surround yourself with the inspiring beauty of nature whenever possible.  You won’t regret it.

With Love & Peace,

Judy, Coulter, Alicia & John
